Starting university is a big step – and if you have a disability, health condition, or specific learning difficulty, you don’t have to wait until classes begin to get help. In fact, many universities offer a range of pre-arrival support to help you settle in and get what you need in place before the term starts.

🎓 University Disability Support Begins Early

What many students don’t realise is that university disability support often starts well before fresher’s week. Some universities even offer financial support for diagnostic assessments, such as for dyslexia, ADHD, or autism. This can be especially helpful if you don’t yet have a formal diagnosis but need one to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).

While DSA is provided by Student Finance (not the university itself), some universities will cover or contribute to the cost of a diagnostic assessment, so you’re not left footing the bill. This can open the door to tailored academic support, assistive technology, and mentoring — all things that can make a huge difference to your university experience.

🤝 Pre-Arrival Support Services

Aside from funding help, universities often run transition programmes to ease you into student life. These can include:

• Early meetings with disability or inclusion advisors

• Access to learning support plans or reasonable adjustments

• Pre-arrival events or welcome programmes for disabled students

• Introductions to counselling or mental health services

• Help with applying for on-campus accommodation or personal support

These services aren’t always widely advertised, so it’s worth checking your chosen university’s website or emailing the student support or disability services team directly. You can often find their contact details under “student support,” “disability services,” or “inclusive learning.”

🗣️ Meg’s Tip: Don’t Wait

“As a student who struggled during my first year because I didn’t know support was available, I can’t stress enough how important it is to reach out early and make the most of what your university has to offer. Universities want to help, but it’s up to us to take that first step. Don’t wait until you're overwhelmed – use what’s there from the start!” – Meg

Takeaway

Being proactive can help reduce stress, increase confidence, and give you a solid foundation as you begin university life. Whether it’s diagnostic assessment funding, help navigating DSA, or a quick chat with a support adviser, getting started early is one of the best things you can do.

Tip: Don’t wait until results day – reach out now. Even if you haven’t confirmed your place, most universities are happy to advise prospective students.
