Packing for university can feel like a mammoth task—especially when it’s your first time moving away from home. With so much advice flying around, it’s easy to overpack and forget what’s actually useful.
✅ Stick to the Essentials
You don’t need to take everything you own. Focus on what you’ll actually use in the first few weeks:
• Bedding (duvet, pillows, sheets)
• Kitchen basics (a couple of pans, cutlery, plate/bowl, mug, reusable containers)
• Toiletries and any medications
• Important documents (passport/ID, Student Finance info, accommodation details)
A good rule of thumb: if it doesn’t serve a clear purpose or make you feel at home, you probably don’t need it right now.
🧠 Sensory Comforts and Personal Touches
Everyone settles in differently, and small things that help you feel calm and comfortable can really support the transition to uni life.
Think about what helps you feel grounded:
- Soft textures or a favourite blanket
- Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs
- Familiar items, sensory aids, or tools that help you focus or unwind
Bringing a few of these can make your new space feel more like your own and ease the adjustment to a new routine.
🚫 Don’t Overpack
Most student rooms are small, and clutter can quickly add to stress. You can always pick up extras later, once you know what your routine actually looks like.
Before you pack:
• Check your accommodation list to see what’s already included (some halls provide kettles, desk lamps, or even bedding)
• Ask current students what they actually used (and what gathered dust)
Meg’s Advice
“When I was packing for uni, I brought way too much and ended up stressed trying to fit it all in my room. What actually helped most were the little comforts and a few things that made my space feel like home. Looking back, I wish I’d focused more on the essentials and prioritised the things that look after my wellbeing. Keep it simple – a calm space really makes a difference when everything else feels new.”
